Her father, William Ward Watkin, was Supervising Architect during the construction of the original Rice Institute campus and later the Dean of Architecture at Rice. The town now known as Round Top, TX, on Cummins Creek, was previously known as Townsend, TX. Many of the Townsend family members participated in the Battle of San Jacinto. Both the Townsends and the Burfords have been very active in civic life.
