James R. Sims papers, 1924-2002

Abstract: The papers contain documents, photographs and printed material which document the career of James R. Sims, who taught civil engineering at Rice Institute (later Rice University) beginning in 1942 as an instructor, to becoming the Herman and George R. Brown Chair of Civil Engineering until his retirement in 1987. He then served as the Herman and George R. Brown Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering from 1987 until his death in 2009.

Overview The Jeanmarie Amend collection is a snapshot of the life of a student at Rice in the early 1980s. A prolific writer (both professionally and personally), Jeanmarie recorded several journals detailing her time at Rice. In addition to her school papers, the collection contains schoolbooks, news clippings, correspondence, photographs, and memorabilia--each contributing the the vibrant picture of Jeanmarie’s university days.

Overview This collection contains a series of typed letters (1981-1982) from Professor Thomas, a member of the Rice University English faculty, to Nancy Boothe, Director of the Woodson Research Center, concerning the history of the university. A miscellaneous file includes notices and photographs relating to Professor Thomas’ Mark Twain programs.
