Takao Doi's Rice Flight Kit for Space Shuttle Endeavour

Abstract Takao Doi, who received his doctorate from Rice, carried this cloth image of the Orion Nebula on the Unites States Space Shuttle Endeavour mission STS-123. The Endeavour launched at 2:28 a.m. March 11, 2008 from launch pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. Doi was a mission specialist on that mission. This collection contains a t-shirt, two photographs, and a uniform patch all carried into space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, STS-51 from September 12-22, 1993. James (Jim) Newman earned his Masters and PhD from Rice and afterwards went to work at NASA, where he flew several space missions.

The collection consists of reports, photographs, and films related to the NASA Suprathermal Ion Detector Experiment (SID), part of the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Package (ALSEP). This experiment, involving equipment developed by Freeman, was part of the work of Apollo missions 12, 14, and 15.
