Abstract:

This collection contains the typescript and galley proofs of the book "The Golden Chair", winner of the Southwest Literary Award. It was published by Elsevier Press in 1954. Mr. Arnold is a former student of Rice University where he was editor of the student newspaper the "Thresher" and president of the Writers Club. He was also Rice correspondent for the "Houston Chronicle."

Abstract The collection consists of fifty-seven inexpensively produced booklets of verse with woodblock print or photo image covers. The booklets are quarto size, 4-3/4” by 6-3/8”, and range in length from eight to forty-eight pages. The content is in verse in stanzas of six, seven, eight, or ten lines. The collection primarily consists of letters addressed to Sir Hall Caine, a prominent British novelist and secretary to Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the poet and painter. Caine lived from May 14, 1853 until August 31, 1931. Caine greatly admired Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelite writings and much of the correspondence centers around the movement. Literary themes, especially related to events of the day, predominate the subjects of the letters.
