George W. Whiting papers
This collection contains typescripts, handwritten notes and correspondence related to the personal and professional life of George W. Whiting, a professor of English at Rice Institute.
Gossip Society manuscript volume
The volume contains the productions of the Sisterhood of the Gossip Society of Gloucester, England. The author is unknown, but goes by the nom de plume “Penelope Placid.” The entire work is purportedly a product of these women’s meetings; more likely, it is the work of one woman satirizing the situation of elderly spinsters whom society considered to be gossips in nineteenth century England.
Harry Van Demark papers
The contents of this collection include the papers and publications of Harry Van Demark. Within the collection are typescript and bound versions of plays and short stories as well as scrap books, articles, and poetry. Van Demark was considered the most prolific writer in the Houston area of his time.
Houston Book Clubs research materials
The Houston Book Clubs Research Materials consist of material from 1993-2007, including interviews, surveys, emails, reports, essays, lists, and correspondence between Elizabeth Long and members of the literary community. The files were compiled by Elizabeth Long during her study of the role of women's reading groups for her 2003 book "Book Clubs: Women and the Uses of Reading in Everyday Life" (University of Chicago Press).

Joe D. Thomas papers
This collection contains a series of typed letters (1981-1982) from Professor Thomas, a member of the Rice University English faculty, to Nancy Boothe, Director of the Woodson Research Center, concerning the history of the university. Also included are two duplicate series that are collections of verse and prose observations on numerous topics, intended for circulation. A miscellaneous file includes notices and photographs relating to Professor Thomas’ Mark Twain programs.
John Robert Anderson manuscript of "The Old Adam"
This collection contains a xerox copy of the typescript of "The Old Adam," an unpublished novel called with a West Texas setting written by John Anderson. Anderson, a 1976 graduate of Rice University, wrote the novel while pursuing a Ph.D. at Yale University. At the time this typescript was accessioned (1983), Anderson was a professor at Pennsylvania University; the novel was unpublished.

Personal correspondence, and reviews of German author and professor of history of literature Josef Nadler's publications, as well as unpublished mss. of Nadler's writings, and seminar papers presented to him while he was a professor. The collection also includes research notes and materials on J.G. Hamann, such as bibliographical information, and other information on him, his philosophy, or his impact.
