Gossip Society manuscript volume

Abstract

The volume contains the productions of the Sisterhood of the Gossip Society of Gloucester, England. The author is unknown, but goes by the nom de plume “Penelope Placid.” The entire work is purportedly a product of these women’s meetings; more likely, it is the work of one woman satirizing the situation of elderly spinsters whom society considered to be gossips in nineteenth century England.

These papers consist of proofs, dummies, and printed copies of published and unpublished works written by or illustrated by Grace Spaulding John. Also included are film/film prints of illustrations from these works, sketchbooks, as well as other artwork. Additional items in the collection include biographical information on John, newspaper and magazine articles, and family photographs, audiotapes and correspondence.

Greenfield Family papers

Grounding of the S.S. Schroon papers

Grover Smith collection of Aldous Huxley correspondence

Abstract

The Grover Smith papers are largely comprised of photocopies of letters between literary critic and author Aldous Huxley and numerous correspondents -- literary, scientific, friends, and family -- mainly from Great Britain and the U.S., dating from 1908-1985, bulk years 1930s-1950s. Some original correspondence between Julian Huxley and Smith exists, which relates to Smith's publication of the Huxley letters as Letters of Aldous Huxley, Harper & Row, 1970.

W. Wortmann / Robert Schumann collection

The central item in this collection is a remarkable contemporary manuscript report of Robert Schumann's conducting at Dusseldorf, written by W. Wortmann, deputy mayor of Düsseldorf and a leading member of the administration of the Allgemeiner Musikverein (of whose orchestra and chorus Schumann had been appointed director in 1850).

Correspondence, financial records, awards, memorials and photographs documenting the family and business life of Gus S. Wortham. Wortham was a pioneer in the insurance industry in Texas , founding the American General Life Insurance Company, one of the first multi-line insurance firms, in 1926. Gus S. and Lyndall F. Wortham were very generous philanthropists in Houston, supporting the arts in many ways.
