Biographical / Historical

James A. Castañeda came to Rice University in 1961 with a dual appointment as professor and coach, his responsibilities as assistant professor of Spanish being dominant. In his forty-seven years on the faculty, he rose to become first, full professor in 1967, and then chairman of the Department of Classics, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. His first coaching position was as head freshman and assistant varsity baseball coach. In 1983 he became Rice’s golf coach, which he continued to be until 1998.

Castañeda was also very active in committee work related to athletics. He was Rice’s N.C.A.A. faculty representative for 28 years. In 2002, and perhaps close to his death in 2008, he was serving on the Western Athletic Conference’s Executive Committee and on the N.C.A.A. as chair of the Academics Eligibility Compliance Cabinet and chairman of the Initial Eligibility Committee.
