Biographical / Historical

Usually called the Library Committee, it is more formally the Standing Committee on the Library, also the Faculty Committee on the Library and the Faculty Library Committee, charged 'to exercise general supervision of the operation of the library and purchase of books for it' (1947) and 'to concern itself with all matters that may influence the effectiveness of Fondren Library and all functions carried out under the Library's auspices' (1986). At first composed only of faculty members, the lbrarian was added to the committee, then undergraduate, graduate and alumni representatives. Examples of the committee's purview: construction, space planning, choosing directors, alotting carrels, the budget, borrowing privileges, membership in professional organizations, fund-raising, self-study, and long-range planning.
