Biographical / Historical

1916 is the first year that Rice University awarded degrees, and there are five diplomas from that first class in the collection. Subsequent years are represented nearly consecutively, including the two commencement ceremonies held in 1944 to accommodate students who served in World War II. A Ph.D. was awarded as early as 1918 (to Hubert Bray in mathematics), at least the earliest documented by this collection.
