Scope and Contents Note

These records have been divided into three series each dealing with a specific Dean of the Wiess School of Natural Sciences. Within each series, there are a number of subseries that focus on different aspects of the dean's work, such as: building projects, job searches, and departmental business.

Biographical/Historical Note

G. King Walters received his B.A. in Physics from the William M. Rice Institute in 1953. He joined the Rice faculty in 1963 as a Professor of Physics and Space Sciences. From 1980 to 1999, he served as the chairman of the Physics Department and an Assistant Dean and Dean of the Wiess School of Natural Sciences.

James Kinsey came to Rice in 1988 as the Dean of the Wiess School of Natural Sciences after 25 years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served as dean until 1998. He was also named interim provost by university president Malcolm Gillis in July 1993.

Kathleen Matthews became Dean of the Wiess School of Natural Sciences in 1998, having been a faculty member since 1972, just as the Dept. of Biochemistry was established. She served as Dept. Chair in 1987. She retired from the dean's office in 2008, and was honored in 2010 by BioHouston for her efforts as a researcher, educator and mentor. She continues to teach at Rice University, as the Stewart Memorial Professor of Biochemistry and Cell Biology.
