Biographical / Historical

The Committee on Disasters and Emergencies (aka Disasters and Defense Committee) was assembled in 1961 to deal with the problem of fallout shelters. Until 1964, the committee dealt only with emergencies and/or disaster situations, leaving primary responsibility for ordinary safety precautions with the departments. When the name was changed to the Committee of Campus Safety, it was intended that the committee would play a reviewing and reinforcing role with respect to safety standards on the campus.
