Biographical / Historical

Wilfred Sellers Dowden was a Rice University professor of English. Dowden began teaching at Rice in 1948 as an instructor and later became a professor and served as the chair of the English department. He retired in 1987.

Dowden edited the letters of Thomas Moore and published the two volume set in 1964. In 1967, he discovered the journal of Irish poet, Thomas Moore. The manuscripts, were long believed to be destroyed by fire were found in the vaults of a London publishing house. Under a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Dowden edited the manuscripts and published them in 1983.
