Biographical / Historical

Clara Reinhardt immigrated from Frankfurt, Germany to Galveston with her cousins, the Grabers, in 1910. She worked as a housekeeper for the Levy family, who owned a funeral home in Galveston. The Levy family also helped Clara bring her 'brother' over, who turned out to be her boyfriend upon arrival. Clara and her boyfriend, Fredel Nussenblatt, were married two months later in Galveston. They were married at the Hebrew Orthodox Benevolent Association, one of the two Orthodox synagogues in Galveston at the time.

Shelley Nussenblatt Kessler, the granddaughter of Fredel and Clara, grew up in Galveston. She attended Beth Jacob synagogue and was a member of B'nai B'rith. She went on to attend the University of Texas at Austin. In 1977, Shelley married Rabbi Jimmy Kessler; the couple had two children, Andy and Jenny.
