Scope and Contents

This collection contains two letters, one an invitation from Fletcher (then President of the Bell County Historical Society) to S. Walker (one-time city editor of the New York Herald-Tribune) to a Historical Society meeting; the other a rather humorous response from Walker signed “Cowman, Patriot, Thinker.”

Biographical / Historical

Herbert H. Fletcher (1892-1968) was a bookseller, editor and publisher who was born in New York but moved to Texas in 1925. He started the Anson Jones Press in 1925 to publish books about Texas and he also edited and published articles and books about life on the frontier. In 1954 he closed his book store in Houston and moved to Salado, where he spent the remainder of his life. He and his wife continued the Anson Jones Press and the sale of rare and fine books. Fletcher was known for his wit, and he served as vice president and editor of the Harris County Historical Society. He also revived the Bell County Historical Society and served as its President; furthermore, he was also editor and publisher for the Texas Academy of Science. After his death in 1968, he was eulogized in a Texas State Senate resolution dated June 28, 1968.
