The Rice University Philosophical Department offers special courses in philosophy which deal with the natural and social sciences, history, linguistics, literature, art, among others. Characteristic of philosophy are commitments to the construction and evaluation of arguments, to expressing thoughts clearly and precisely, and to defending one’s ideas and evaluating the ideas of others. The study of philosophy thus provides resources for critical participation in all realms of human endeavor.
The department is committed to excellence in research and teaching. Among its research strengths are ethics (especially applied ethics), social and political philosophy, and core analytic areas (especially of mind). The teachings are intended to prepare doctoral students for careers, and to provide both undergraduate majors and students from other disciplines philosophical knowledge and skills.
