Peninsular War letters
Scope and Contents
A collection of letters written by British officers serving in Portugal during the Peninsular War referring to matters concerning the war. Among the writers are Lord Fitzroy Somerset, Colonel Trant, Major R. M. Patrick, Major William Tulloh, and Major Williams. Recipients include Marshal William Carr Beresford, Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Arbuthnot, and Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Hardinge. Also included in the collection is a memorandum to the Minsistre de la guerre re. candidates and a Military chart (22 April 1808).

Historical Sketch
The Peninsular War took place in Spain and Portugal (1808-1814) during the Napoleonic Wars. When the French invaded Spain in 1808, an alliance formed between Spain, Portugal and Britain to expel the French Empire from the Iberian Peninsula.
