Scope and Contents

Legal and financial documents of incorporation and general documents from the Adath Israel Congregation in Houston TX, from its establishment in 1905, until it merged with Congregation Adath Emeth and Congregation Beth Jacob to form the United Orthodox Synagogues in 1966. Of particular interest are a copy of the Adath Israel Congregation Constitution and By-laws and a Mezuzah from the original Adath Israel building, circa. 1900.

Permission to publish material from the Happy Katz Adath Israel Collection must be obtained from the Woodson Research Center, Fondren Library. The Woodson Research Center use policy is that researchers assume sole responsibility for any infringement of privacy, literary rights, copyrights, or other rights arising from their use of the archival materials. In addition to any restrictions placed by donors, certain kinds of archival materials are restricted for the life of the creator plus 50 years. These materials include, but are not limited to, student grades, transcripts, and any job applications or recommendations.

Biographical / Historical

The Adath Israel Congregation was founded in 1905, at a time when the "Galveston Movement" sought to redirect Jewish immigration away from New York towards the center of the country through the Texas port, brought hundreds of Jews to Houston between 1905 and 1914. In 1963, it merged with two other Houston Orthodox Synagogues, Congregation Adath Emeth and Congregation Beth Jacob, to form the United Orthodox Synagogues (UOS) in 1966.
