Scope and Contents

A school yearbook and memory book, diplomas and certificates, news clippings, event programs, business materials, and photographs document the lives and careers of members of the Levy and Cohen families from 1918 to 2003 - focusing primarily on the lives of Edward Levy and Edna Mae (Cohen) Levy. Of particular interest is Edna Mae's 1934 high school memory book and family photographs.

Permission to publish material from the Levy-Cohen Family papers/memorabilia must be obtained from the Woodson Research Center, Fondren Library.

The Woodson Research Center use policy is that researchers assume sole responsibility for any infringement of privacy, literary rights, copyrights, or other rights arising from their use of the archival materials. In addition to any restrictions placed by donors, certain kinds of archival materials are restricted for the life of the creator plus 50 years. These materials include, but are not limited to, student grades, transcripts, and any job applications or recommendations.

Biographical / Historical

Edward Joseph Levy was born Septmember 5, 1911, in Marlin, Texas. He moved with his family to Houston in 1927. Edward wanted to be a mortician since he was a child, and following graduation from San Jacinto High School in 1930, he attended the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Sciences and graduated in 1932. He returned to Houston and worked for two funeral services -- Settegast-Kopf Co. and Geo. H. Lewis & Sons -- before founding Levy Funeral Directors on Cleburne Street in Houston's Riverside area in 1938. Mr. Levy served on the board of Jewish Funeral Directors of America for over 20 years and was honorary president.

Edna Mae Cohen was born February 6, 1917, in Houston. She graduated from Sam Houston High School in 1934, and later went on to graduate from The Commonwealth College of Sciences with a diploma in funeral directing in 1958.

Edward and Edna Mae married on August 4, 1940, in Houston and had two children: Carolyn and Barbara. Mr. and Mrs. Levy were members of Congregation Beth Israel and belonged to many professional organizations. They owned and operated Levy Funeral Directors until 1970 when the business was sold to Service Corp. International.

Edward Levy died February 8, 2003 and Edna Mae Levy on April 23, 2008.

Barbara Levy Bendalin donated the papers in June 2018.
