Biographical / Historical

The Emery/Weiner School began in 2001 when a newly formed Jewish community high school merged with the I. Weiner Secondary School, which had served students in grades six through eight since 1978. Planning for the new school had begun in January 1999 when a committee was formed to explore the possibility of expanding the campus of the I. Weiner School and simultaneously developing a new Jewish high school. A fund-raising campaign was undertaken with the goal of 18 million dollars for land acquisition, debt service, initial deficits from operations, scholarships, and an endowment.

A twelve-acre site was purchased in June 1999, the Kirksey and Partners architectural firm was hired in Octboer, followed by engaging Mission Constructors as general contractor in February 2000. Construction began in June 2000. The opening day of classes took place on August 20, 2001.

Stuart Dow, hired in August 2000 as the Founding Head of the new high school and middle school, has continued in that position to the present time. The school describes its mission as "to educate and develop students whose intellect, moral character, and Jewish identity provide a lifelong foundation for personal growth, commitment to the Jewish people, and Tikkun Olam-improving the world in which we live."
