Scope and Contents

The holding consists of a number of articles by Dr. Carroll, as well as lecture notes and transparencies used in his lectures. In addition, Dr. Carroll’s testimony as an expert witness and member of the Nation Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Scientific Research Panel studying exit velocities of various types of baseball bats when striking a pitched ball is included, as are the reports of other expert witnesses in the case of Baum Research and Development Co. Inc. vs. Hiller & Bradsby Co. Inc.

Permission to publish material from the Michael M. Carroll Papers, 1965-2015 must be obtained from the Woodson Research Center, Fondren Library.

The Woodson Research Center use policy is that researchers assume sole responsibility for any infringement of privacy, literary rights, copyrights, or other rights arising from their use of the archival materials. In addition to any restrictions placed by donors, certain kinds of archival materials are restricted for the life of the creator plus 50 years. Biographical Note

Michael M. Carroll, former Dean of the George R. Brown School of Engineering at Rice University, was born in Ireland in 1936 and came to the United States in 1960. He obtained a PhD from Brown University in Applied Mathematics in 1965. He was Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1965 to 1988. He came to Rice in 1988 and served as Dean of the School of Engineering for ten years, then returned to teaching and research until his retirement in 2015. He died on January 17, 2016 in Houston, Texas.
