First and second proofs of Stravinsky's reduction for piano solo, extensively annotated by the composer. Berlin: Russischer Musikverlag G.m.b.H. Édition Russe de Musique [PN R.M.V. 455], [before December 1928].

Folio. Unbound as issued. Printed in white on a blue background on recto only. Undated, but presumably before December 1928 when the piano score was first published.

With autograph identification in the hand of Soulima Stravinsky to upper wrappers of both proofs: Le Baiser de la Fée 1ere Epreuve (Réduction pr. piano solo par l'Auteur) S. Str."; Le Baiser de la Fée 2e Epreuve (Réduction pr. Piano Solo par l'Auteur) copie de S. Str."
Scope and Contents Proof II Pp. 1-46 (i.e., the first, second, and third tableaux; the final tableau is not present), incorporating Stravinsky's corrections and alterations indicated in Proof I. With additional corrections and alterations in Stravinsky's hand in pencil both within the score and in the margins.

Biographical / Historical

Le Baiser de la Fée, a ballet in four scenes by Stravinsky with a scenario after Hans Christian Andersen's The Ice Maiden, is based on piano pieces and songs by Tchaikovsky linked by passages Stravinsky composed in a similar style. The work was choreographed by Bronislava Nijinska and first performed by the Ballets Ida Rubinstein in Paris at the Opéra on November 27, 1928, with the composer conducting. The autograph of the present work is held at the Sacher Foundation in Basel, Switzerland.
