Series I: J.H. Bastide Letter

Scope and Contents

From the Collection: This is a handwritten letter dated May 13, 1743 and signed by J. H. Bastide. The letter is addressed to an "My Lord Duke." Bastide, self-described as "the second Lieutenant in General Cornwallis's regiment," states that he has received advice that he is to be exchanged from his regiment to one in Nova Scotia. He does not wish to be transferred and begs leave to resign his Lieutenancy to his son or permission to sell it in order to provide some security for his family. This letter consist of one sheet of paper measuring 36.5 cm by 22 cm.
