Anonymous Girl's Diary, Saarland, Germany
The manuscript diary is by a young German girl from the Saarland area of Germany, possibly from a rich, Catholic family. The bulk of the diary pertains to the girl’s personal life and daily activities; however, comments about conditions in Germany during the war are also found in the work.
Deutsches Notgeld currency album
This album of emergency paper currency measures 14-5/8”x11-5/8”x1-7/8” album with the printed title “Notgeld 1914-1924.” It contains approximately 640 separate pieces of the paper currency (Notgeld) issued by regional institutions in Germany and Austria-Hungary, primarily around the end of the World War I. Not issued by a central bank, Notgeld was not legal tender but rather an accepted means of payment in a particular locale.
Libby Prison Inmate Letter
Letter written during the Civil War by an anonymous Union Army prisoner- of-war, dated December18, 1864, and addressed from Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia, to United States Senator William Wright of New Jersey, describing his worsening health while held in close confinement in the prison as hostage for a Confederate officer imprisoned in West Virginia, and urging the senator to intercede on his behalf to secure his exchange and release.
